Art occupies a unique space in society that can address ideas and subjects through diverse methods which challenge public perceptions. Due to it’s malleable form of expression, art can speak in a language that cannot be formed by words but creates an inner consciousness that is yet to be fully understood. It is a compelling form of resistance that can garner mass attention, incite people to take action, and express ideas in a clear and concise manner. LGBTQ activists have used different artistic approaches (including but not limited to graffiti, posters, photography, and other types of multimedia such as video, images, audio) to challenge social and political beliefs and perceptions about gender, sexual identity, and the ways these issues intersect with larger forms of oppression. Have a look at the resources we’ve provided for a more in-depth understanding about how you can use art as a tool for your campaign and for resistance at large.
